Most Sunday & Evening Bus Services To Be Axed?
Bus services across D&G may be axed to save the council money it has been revealed. At a meeting today (11/03/16) SWESTRANS are to consider how may rural buses to axe. The proposals are to eliminate all Sunday journeys, all Monday to Saturday journeys after 18.00pm, and axe the Stranraer to Cairnryan (P&O/Stena Ferries connecting) service.
It is thought the cuts will save around £305,488 in the year 2016-17.
Given that this is a very rural area, the axing of so many bus services will have a major impact on those without their own transport, not to mention tourists. That this decision is to be made as the new D&G Regional Tourism Strategy will be launched is, to put it mildly, ‘bad timing’. (sic)
In effect, these cuts will act as a curfew on most transport-less rural resident’s activities. The effects on our tourism industry will not be helpful either. Many of our visitors use the rural bus services to explore the area, thereby reducing their carbon footprint.
However, the proposed cuts to the Dumfries -Stranraer route will also impact on those journeying west from Dumfries/Carlisle, and vice versa, by bus – there being no direct rail link between Dumfries/Stranraer.
Full details of these cuts can be found here, on SWESTRAN’S website. (See pages 103 – 106 for summary of cuts & routes).
Brief details of some proposed cuts to routes across our area are:
Remove ALL Sunday journeys:
#367 Stranraer – Portpatrick, 306 buses cut a year.
#500 Stranraer – Dumfries, 306 buses cut a year.
Remove ALL Monday to Saturday Journeys, after 1800pm, and ALL Sunday Journeys:
#367 Stranraer – Portpatrick, 2142 buses cut a year.
#500 Stranraer – Dumfries, 918 buses cut a year.
Remove ALL dedicated service connecting modes of transport:
#350 Stranraer – Cairnryan (All Journeys), 42,342 buses cut a year.
Presumably, visitors wanting to catch a ferry, at Cairnyan, or get into town for the train or a bus, will soon need to hire a taxi for the transfer. Anyone missing the last #500 service, in either Dumfries or Stranraer, will effectively be stranded until early next morning. For the benefit of all visitors to the area, here are the taxi numbers you will need to get to, and from, the ferry terminals:
