D&G Wins ‘Holiday Destination of the Year’ for 2015/16,
BBC’s Countryfile Magazine has voted Dumfries & Galloway the ‘Holiday Destination of the Year 2015/16’. Nor surprising, really!
Given the number of things to see, do and participate in, D&G has a lot to offer the discerning tourist and visitor. From exploring our forests and coastline, angling at sea or around the coast, checking out the nearest galaxy from the Dark Sky Park, dining on fresh local produce, sampling local beers and whisky, finding that rare book at Wigtown, partying at the Wickerman Festival, mountain biking on some of the best trails in the UK, hill walking…..we’ve got it covered!
Dumfries and Galloway’s Major Events Partnership – of which the Wigtownshire Chamber is a member – has been a particularly outstanding success story. Providing financial support and/or encouragement via their Major Events Strategic Fund, it has played a major role in boosting tourism growth across the region.
Thanks to the DGMESF, events such as the Big Burns Supper, Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival, the popular Spring Fling Open Artist’s Studio Weekend, the World Championship Ice Hockey Tournament, the Eden Festival, the Knockengorroch Festival and the ever growing popularity of the Wigtown Book Festival – to name but a few – have proved highly successful in attracting more visitors to the region. And tourism means business, and economic growth.
This year we also have the Tour of Britain 2016, The Grand Depart of the Tour will happen here in September. All of these events are making a major contribution to the local economy:
- Big Burns Supper – ticket income up by 97% in 2015*
- Spring Fling – generated c. £1.5m in economic terms – up 50% in 3 years*
- Wigtown Book Festival – 7.5% year-on-year growth to 2016*
- D&G Major Events Strategic Fund has generated c.£10m income for D&G for an annual outlay of c.£250k PA!
This year, why don’t you check out the ‘Holiday Destination of the Year 2015/16’: Dumfries & Galloway, the Natural Choice!
